Spa Getaways Just Around the Corner

Chrissy G.

Whether you're in the mood to head north or south from San Diego, Bardessono near Napa and Rancho La Puerta in Baja California could be just what your mind, body, and soul needs. Both properties offer luxurious, organic spa treatments amongst lush gardens and rolling hills, with delicious food and fun activities.

Rancho La Puerto
Is it the organic farm and cooking school or the authentic spa treatments or the 3,000 acres to hike and bike and wander along that keep people coming back to this cherished destination spa? Few can compare to this property that launched back in 1940 in Tecate, Baja California, Mexico, becoming the first true destination spa. And like all good and true destination spas, the emphasis here is on spending a full week immersed in the experience. This spring, join The Ranch to “reawaken” your senses.  It’s the height of wildflower season, and each morning you will wake up to gorgeous sunrises, inspired to embark on morning hikes with picturesque views. Talented presenters will join the property to reawaken your passion to live your best days yet. For more info visit:

If you want to experience true green luxury, check out this modern hotel in the heart of Californian’s wine country. Bardessono is a LEED Platinum-aspiring hotel, spa, and restaurant that’s located in Yountville on six tastefully landscaped acres with drought-tolerant foliage, organic herb gardens, and vineyards. Simple, sparse lines (think box-like buildings covered in corrugated steel) combined with a smart and stylish use of reclaimed materials (recycled stone and salvaged orchard Walnut, Cypress, Redwood, and California Bay woods are evident throughout) are just some of the reasons why we like this property so much. Bardessono is a great place to go with a loved one, as each of the hotel’s 62 suites doubles as a private spa stocked with some of the best organic towels, linens, and robes. The well-balanced spa menu offers an East-meets-West-inspired menu and organic skin care. For more info visit:

Relaxing in Wine Country

Northern California, a place where you can actually see the changes in the season, is one of my favorite quick get-aways during fall, which is why I was so excited to stumble upon Bardessono. Nestled in Yountville within the Napa Valley, the hotel and spa is only one of three LEED Platinum certified resorts in the country - meaning they take their commitment to sustainability very seriously.

Treatments at the hotel spa are geared around the season, with fall being a time to relieve stress and restore balance of mind and body. After a hot, busy summer I'm sure we can all appreciate that!

De-Stress Your Travels

Chrissy G.

Most people take a vacation to relax and get away from the stress. It's a funny thing though, the process needed to get away - packing, airport security, flying, lost baggage, and more - can start your adventure off with more tension than when you started. To help find balance, essential oil aromatherapy might be the perfect solution to keeping your mind and body in equilibrium.

"We feel stressed and scattered and can get pushed off-balance very easily when we travel," says Amy Galper, founder of Buddha Nose. "Essential oil blends provide an immediate connection with your emotional and spiritual self. If you take a few seconds to inhale and find stillness, they can help you regain balance.

Galper never travels without Buddha Nose I Booster Salve. "We're stuck on an airplane with recycled air and people sneezing," Galper says. "You can add this to your arsenal to keep you well and stimulate that mind-body connection." The salve boosts immunity and helps guard against infections. Glaper rubs it on her neck and shoulders, and wraps a scarf around her neck to hold it in. To combat jet lap, she recommends a bath with Buddha Nose Detox Bath Tea Sachets upon arrival at your destination.

Destination : Baja California

Chrissy G.

Only an hour's drive south of San Diego, Rancho La Puerta in Baja California may just be the perfect summertime escape you've been looking for. Voted the World's Best Destination Spa by Travel+Leisure Magazine two years in a row, the eco resort has something for everyone to enjoy.

The 3,000 acre property has it's own organic farm and gardens so you can expect the cuisine to be nothing short of fantastic. The resort offers cooking classes year round for guests to learn how to prepare international dishes using just-picked local, seasonal, and organically grown ingredients.

Three health and beauty centers offer a range of treatments including massage, facials, body treatments, and acupuncture. The spa staff is trained in several disciplines to offer sessions that fit each persons needs. Aromatic and medicinal herbs and other healing plants grown in their organic gardens are used throughout the treatments.

The resort offers an array of fitness classes, including yoga, pilates, and golf, as well as multiple hiking trails with world class views of the surrounding valleys and hillsides.

Escape to Thailand

Chrissy G.

Of all the places in the world I'd like to visit, Thailand definitely tops the list! And experiencing a relaxing, spa locale in-country? Well, even better! Chiva-Som, which translates to "Haven of Life," is nestled in 7 acres of lush gardens, while offering spectacular ocean views. The resort offers 70 treatment rooms with a kinesis studio, gym, watsu pool, flotation pool, large outdoor swimming pool, bathing pavilion with kneipp bath, sauna, steam, jacuzzi, and indoor swimming pool.

At Chiva-Som, the food is a mix of traditional Thai dishes and elegant Mediterranean cuisine, serving gourmet meals with organically grown fruits and vegetables from their own garden. They even offer cooking classes with visits to the local farmers market and of course, their own garden.

I was happy to discover that at this retreat, social sustainability is as important as its push toward carbon neutrality or its organic farm, scrupulous recycling, solar panels and water conservation. Staff members and their families receive health coverage and scholarships, and they, in turn, visit schools to educate kids on health and the need to protect the development-stressed local ecosystem.

Looking forward to the day when I can visit Chiva-Som for myself!

Beautiful Skin Around the Globe

Chrissy G.

Needing a temporary fix to our ongoing travel bug, we decided to check out some exotic locales around the globe to see how they achieve incredible skin. Here are a couple of our favorites:

Tibetan Ku Nye Facial | India

This core energy-balancing facial begins with a rose hip scrub to exfoliate the prepare the skin for a sea buckthorn elixir. Ancient Tibetan oil and organic buckthorn improve cellular rejuvenation and micro-circulation, providing anti-aging benefits, and hot stone acupressure restores glowing radiance. A lavendar and honey milk completes the treatment, leaving you feeling like you're walking on clouds.

Balinese Garden Facial | Bali

Capturing plants' healing powers and utilizing all-natural traditional village remedies, this facial incorporates ingredients selected from local gardens - like salad for your skin! The facial begins with a moisturizing coconut milk cleanse, followed by a fresh sweet corn scrub to exfoliate dead skin cells. Settle into a floral steam bath before indulging in a virgin coconut oil face and neck massage and a honey-lime cucumber mask.
